Selecting and retaining skilled talent in a competitive environment

Three quarters of organisations reported experiencing recruitment challenges in 2011, despite widespread unemployment across the UK. Employers are being inundated with unsuitable candidates, struggling to fill vacancies, and talented individuals are staying put, leading to huge skills gaps and a war for talent.

This year’s Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPDRecruitment and Resourcing Conference tackles the issue of how organisations can overcome a shortage of skilled workers. As an organisation’s success depends on its people, it is critical that they are equipped to attract and select the best recruits, and to identify and develop the talent within the organisation.

Senior level insight will be supplied by a variety of private and public sector organisations during the two day conference, including First GroupTescoYo! SushiDiageo and NHS Employers. The use of case studies will highlight practical examples of successful recruitment and resourcing practices to help develop a sustainable recruitment strategy for the long-term.

The conference will offer recruitment professionals advice on how to develop and promote their employer brand in order to attract and secure the best people for their vacancies. As well as highlighting good practice in recruitment the conference will also tackle resourcing issues such as identifying and re-deploying talent internally to fill key roles.

Sessions at the two-day conference will also cover:

  • A practical approach to social media recruitment
  • Developing direct recruiting strategies and capabilities
  • Successful graduate investment
  • Preparing for a return in job market mobility
  • Agency worker’s regulations

Rebecca Clake, Research Adviser, CIPD, says: “High levels of unemployment have boosted quantity, but employers are still struggling with quality. Headlines focus on unemployment but those statistics hide an ongoing struggle for employers to find the skills and experience they need to drive their businesses forward.

“Last year’s Resourcing and Talent Planning survey showed that 72{6060b2de664e4eaa3e7b7e86961ce2c4bbd7a29b6c1097abf8257a4e5b07383e} of organisations experienced recruitment difficulties due to a lack of necessary specialist or technical skills. Employing the right people in the right jobs continues to be a priority for organisations and this conference will offer those professionals working in recruitment the opportunity to share best practice and debate the key issues affecting them.”

The CIPD Recruitment Exhibition will be running alongside the conference, with leading recruitment and resourcing suppliers showcasing the latest ideas and solutions. Highlights from the 2012 CIPD Resourcing and Talent Planning survey, in partnership with Hays, will be presented in one of the free learning sessions on the exhibition floor.
