Monster Global Poll

A recent global poll conducted by Monster  reveals more than half of respondents (55 per cent) would change jobs for the opportunity to work in an industry they are passionate about.  While we know from past research that salary, benefits and job location are critical to the job decision-making process, other motivations to move include a lively office (19 per cent); the opportunity to work with people workers professionally admire (12 per cent); the opportunity to work for a cool brand (11 per cent); and an innovative office design (two per cent).

Monster, the premier global online employment solution and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: MWW) asked visitors to their site the question, “Aside from salary, benefits and location, which of the following would most likely attract you to a new job?” and received 2,033 responses.

Changing jobs to work in desirable industries is consistently the greatest motivator across the regions, where Canadian (67 percent), UK (63 percent), Dutch (58 percent), and Mexican (54 percent) respondents are all most likely to be attracted to a new job for this reason, with Germany the only exception to this rule (39 percent).

In comparison, a lively office environment is considered the most attractive reason to move for almost half (45 percent) of German respondents, in contrast to just one in ten (ten percent) UK and Canadian respondents. While in the Netherlands, almost one in five respondents (19 percent) would change job for the opportunity to work for a cool/aspirational brand, ranking higher than any other country that includes Germany (nine percent); UK (nine percent); Canada (seven percent) and Mexico (five percent).

Professional admiration holds a strong degree of influence for more than one in ten respondents in the UK (17 percent), Canada (15 percent) and Mexico (13 percent). While at the other end of the spectrum, only three percent of respondents from the Netherlands and seven percent from Germany would move job for the opportunity to work with people they professionally admire.

Interestingly, an innovative office design is least important in terms of attracting employees to new jobs, where just six percent of respondents in the Netherlands would move for this, followed by a staggeringly low one percent across the UK, Germany and Canada.

“It’s not surprising that, after core considerations such as salary, passion is a primary factor for people considering a new job,” says Charles Purdy, Monster.com’s career expert. “While many feel like their dream job is out of reach, it is possible for people to find niches where their skills and passions overlap by doing some basic self-assessment and research.”
